The Community Development & Housing Department in Wilmington  and 30+ non-profit partners play a vital role in supporting the community’s housing needs. With a focus on low- to moderate-income individuals and families, the department collaborates with community-based nonprofits and organizations to create opportunities for first-time homebuyers, helping them navigate the path to homeownership. Additionally, the department works diligently to preserve and revitalize neighborhoods, ensuring a thriving and sustainable living environment for residents.

Black entrepreneurs can grow ideas into full-fledged concepts and beyond at Genesis Block in Wilmington, NC. As the city’s hub for entrepreneurship, Genesis Block hosts the Academy, three curriculum-based training programs,  to support early-stage startups. The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce also has partnered with several Black business leaders in the local community to create the African American Business Council — a group that holds regular networking events for all business owners in the region featuring content selected by the council. Additionally, women’s networking groups, such as Women in Networking (WIN), the Women Business Owner’s Council and Three Ladies in Wilmington (3LW) are perfect for growing your network and sharing knowledge.

Residents in Wilmington, NC celebrate the Latin American, African American and LGBTQ communities through celebrations each year. The annual Festival Latino — the largest  Latino Festival in North Carolina —  showcases the rich culture, music and cuisine of Latin America, while Port City Pride brings together the LGBTQ community and its allies for a lively and inclusive celebration of love and acceptance. Additionally, the city boasts a strong African American cinematography community, with the Black Arts Alliance having hosted the renowned annual NC Black Film Festival for over two decades.
