April 18, 2023 update: An internal college naming process, conducted with the College of Arts and Sciences’ faculty and staff, recently concluded. On April 18, Provost Winebrake announced to campus the following selected names that will be used moving forward:

College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts
College of Science and Engineering

Both new colleges will start on July 1, 2023.

UNC Wilmington’s College of Arts and Sciences will transition to two new colleges from its existing structure beginning July 1. The new colleges will aid the university in addressing the future needs of the region and in furthering the mission, vision and evolution of academics at the university.

Each college will have a strategic focus: one for social sciences, humanities and the arts, and the other will focus on computing, engineering and science.

“We are excited to launch these two new colleges,” said Provost James J. Winebrake. “This new structure will allow us to expand the educational experiences we offer our students, further support the great work of our faculty and staff and respond to an evolving higher education landscape.”

The College of Arts and Sciences continues with normal operations as the university conducts searches this spring for new founding deans and evaluates staffing and resource needs. The anticipated start date for both deans is July 1, 2023.

“As the former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, I fundamentally understand the scope of this transformation. I am immensely proud of the college, our students, faculty and staff, and their achievements over the years,” Chancellor Aswani K. Volety said. “By creating smaller, more agile colleges, UNCW will build on a firm foundation to better support and enhance the studies of our students and the work of our dedicated faculty and staff. The two new colleges will also allow us to advance the university in ways that will positively impact the region and state through our commitment to excellence in teaching, research, artistic activities and community engagement.”

Additional information about the new colleges can be found on the current College of Arts and Sciences website.
